Job Description and Duties


Located on the beautiful campus of San Francisco State University, the Sutro Library, a branch of the California State Library, is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual for a Cataloging Librarian position.

Under the general supervision of the Principal Librarian, the Librarian is responsible for cataloging materials in various formats into the State Library's online catalog, maintaining catalog records, and serving as a resource for cataloging issues. The Librarian also provides reference assistance and conducts archival literacy classes and outreach to the San Francisco State University community and beyond. This position is also the Sutro Library volunteer coordinator.

The Sutro Library is home to the antiquarian book and archival collection of Adolph Sutro containing over 90,000 volumes of rare books and 100,000 pamphlets, broadsides and maps. We also hold an impressive collection of genealogy and local history sources.

Working Conditions

The Librarian must have the ability to access materials located on compact shelving units including material that may be at floor level or over five (5) feet off the ground; move book trucks holding up to 100 pounds of weight and to move and position objects weighing up to 35 pounds including large, and awkward libray books and other library materials; retrieve information from microfiche/microfilm machines and to digitize information using scanners. The incumbent works 40 hours per week in an office setting, with artificial light and natural light and temperature control. Daily access to and use of a personal computer is essentia. Regular travel to Sacramento and other locations is required as necessary.
