Job Description and Duties

Located across the street from the State Capitol, the California State Library is a small, dynamic state agency looking for employees who are interested in challenging and rewarding job opportunities. The State Library is home to public reading rooms including Information Services, Government Publications, the Law Library, the Braille and Talking Book Library, and the California History Room.  It also plays host to Night at the State Library, annual community events like Juneteenth, the Archives Crawl, Museum Day and exhibits you won't find anywhere else!

Our State Library Services Bureau, Witkin State Law Library has one key position open now! 
Under the supervision of a supervising librarian, the incumbent in this position provides legal and general reference assistance to patrons as well as outreach services.  The incumbent also serves as a resource in collection management and maintenance as well as a resource on special projects.

Working Conditions

  • Uses a PC for extended periods of time.
  • Is able to be a member of a team providing public reference service during normal library business hours of 9:30 AM-4:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
  • Manages various customer needs while answering questions in person, on the telephone, and through e-mail and other electronic means.
  • Provides customer service to a diverse community.
Work assignments may involve travel to alternative locations, depending on operational needs
  • Uses a PC for extended periods of time.
  • Serves as a member of a team providing public reference service during normal library business hours of 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. During the absence of other staff or to meet assignment deadlines, flexibility in hours is required.
  • Transacts business with customers in person, on the telephone, and through electronic communications.
  • Provides customer service to a diverse community.
  • Work assignments may involve travel to various locations, depending on operational needs.
  • Will deal on a regular basis with a variety of volunteers and patrons with visual impairment and/or other disabilities, either on the telephone, via e-mail or in person.
  • Works at a computer workstation for extended periods of time.
  • Shares multi-employee workspace in a cubicle environment.
  • Ability to turn handles on compact shelving units filled with library materials.
Ability to occasionally handle heavy equipment (up to 25 pounds) and library material
