Job Description and Duties

Under the general supervision of the Environmental Program Manager I in the Landscape Conservation Planning Program, the incumbent is responsible for having an in-depth knowledge of ecological principals, Department policies, administrative procedures, applicable laws and regulations, and data and tools designed to protect California’s biological diversity. These efforts will be conducted through voluntary conservation planning, in partnership with other State, federal, and local agencies, private landowners, and other stakeholders. This assignment typically includes developing partnerships; communicating and engaging with federal, State, and local agencies and stakeholders on Program components and goals; identifying priority focus areas for planning; providing scientific and policy guidance; identifying, developing, and refining needed regional conservation planning tools; and assisting and training regional staff. A high degree of personal initiative and critical thought is expected. Public contacts made during this work are sensitive and involve a wide variety of special interest groups. Incumbent will make recommendations regarding science, laws, conservation principles, and policies/procedures related to ecosystem-level planning and will collaboratively identify tools and data gaps.

Working Conditions

The worksite is in an office building in downtown Sacramento and does not include parking. State housing is not available. This position does not involve telecommuting. The position involves using a computer keyboard several hours a day, attending lengthy meetings in-person and via conference calls, and working with staff statewide to complete work assignments. Occasional travel and field work may be required.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience with wildlife and habitat connectivity planning and project implementation, experience in fish and wildlife resource conservation, and possession of a bachelor’s or advanced degree with a major in wildlife, fisheries, ecology, or conservation is preferred. A high degree of personal initiative is expected, and excellent organizational, analytical, written and verbal communication, and interpersonal skills are required.
