Job Description and Duties

Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the incumbent operates equipment identified as Category 1 and Category 2 used by assigned unit, and works individually or with a crew engaged in the removal of graffiti on overhead sign and bridge structures on the State highways in his area of responsibility. This incumbent receives functional guidance from a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Lead worker. There is continual guidance while work is in progress. The Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor makes the final review for acceptability and completeness.

Will be required to operate and maintain all hand equipment and material involved with the painting of graffiti.


May be required to work at but not limited to 350’ above land or water using various painting equipment. May be required to work out of truck personnel baskets hung from crane trucks by cable and personnel baskets on hydraulic booms. Will be required to Qualify on Personnel Hoists and Cranes. Incumbent may be required to assist in raised pavement marker operations. Possession of a Class A Driver’s license with tank endorsement is required.  




This position is subject to the post and bid process. Other methods of appointment will be considered only in the event there are no bidders.


Under the direction of a Maintenance Supervisor Maintenance, the employee will operate category 1 and 2 equipment requiring a class "A" commercial driver’s license with tanker (N) endorsement. Will work individually or with a crew performing tasks related to highway maintenance work. May be assigned as a dedicated operator on specialty equipment. In the absence of the Maintenance Supervisor, a Caltrans Maintenance Leadworker or other qualified person may be in charge. May work for other supervisors or units as required due to operational needs. May receive training from other employee(s) of other crews, region, district or headquarters.
The work week is a 5/40, Monday to Friday, 0700 to 1530 hours. The incumbent will be required to work overtime, irregular shifts/alternate work schedules including nights, holidays and weekends, shift changes due to operational needs. May be loaned to other crews District wide as well as out of town work locations.
