Job Description and Duties

This position provides an exciting and unique opportunity to play a significant role in the protection of California's coastal environments from marine invasive species. Under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) will serve as co-lead of the Department's Marine Invasive Species Program, which monitors and reports the status and trends of non-indigenous species associated with ballast water discharge and hull-fouling in California's coastal and estuarine waters. The incumbent will collaborate closely with colleagues in the Department and other state and federal entities engaged in the investigation and analysis of marine invasive species; serve as a statewide expert in ship mediated species introductions to California's marine and estuarine environments and serve in a leadership role for the program. Duties include design and implementation of the monitoring strategy, contract management and oversight of the research program, management of database records, and communication of the results to a wide variety of audiences, including the scientific community, legislature, environmental resource managers and the public. The Senior Environmental Scientist (Specialist) will engage with globally active scientists involved in marine invasive species research at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and with the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories; represent the Department on advisory panels related to invasive species issues, and attend interagency meetings and public hearings related to ballast water issues and develop comments for the Department as needed.

Working Conditions

This position is in an office environment and involves sitting most of the time, and the use of a computer and standard office equipment. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and be prepared to travel using a State vehicle. Occasional travel may be required.

The worksite for this position is currently located in downtown Sacramento. However, the CDFW offices are scheduled to be moved to 1010 Riverside Parkway, West Sacramento in late 2019. Free parking will be available in the West Sacramento location.

NOTE: OSPR is a 24-hour oil and pollution spill response organization. The incumbent in this position can be required to participate in prevention and response training, drills and incidents throughout California, and to to be available to deploy/travel with short notice for extended periods (up to 7 days).

The ideal candidate will have a depth of experience working with environmental data and communicating the results to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences. Well-suited candidates should possess the following skills:

A strong background in principles of applied ecology and environmental monitoring, and strong written and verbal skills.

Special skills in data analysis and presentation, including skills with spatial analysis, and the creative analysis and display of data are highly desirable.

Knowledge of marine ecology and invasive species (invertebrates) is also desirable.

The successful candidate will be able to work independently, take initiative to lead the program, and work collaboratively with staff and stakeholders with a variety of backgrounds and skills.
