Job Description and Duties

Environmental Services Intern (Seasonal) ($12.51 - $16.67/HOUR) – Colorado Desert District

The reporting location is Colorado Desert District Headquarters, Borrego Springs. This position works under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist and the lead of District Environmental Scientist(s).  The Colorado Desert District includes both desert and montane areas and spans from 0 to 6500 feet in elevation. This natural resource rich District consists of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, Palomar Mountain State Park, Salton Sea State Recreation Area, Picacho State Recreation Area, and the Indio Hills Palms unit. The position requires a valid California Driver’s License.  May work independently and may guide the work of Senior Maintenance/Maintenance Aides.

The ESI assists District staff with natural resource management projects and operations (including the development, implementation and direction of projects within the Natural Heritage Stewardship Program, the Deferred Maintenance (Natural) Program, and the Natural Resource Maintenance Program). Assist in field work including forest fuels reduction, monitor populations of rare, threatened, and/or endangered plant and animal species and assess the health, viability and condition of said populations. Use chainsaws, hand tools, and herbicides, with training, in a safe and proper manner to control exotics plants. Assist in data entry and analysis. Desirable qualifications include prescribed fire experience and use of herbicides.

Hike with loads up to 50 pounds over rugged terrain into remote locations, camp for extended periods, manual labor, extensive walking to and from work sites, hot summer temperatures, cold winter conditions including work in rain and snow conditions, and work in montane and desert environments. Operate four-wheel drive vehicles, including on rough roads.

Special Requirements

Minimum Qualifications       Either I

Equivalent to graduation from college with a major or a minor (or equivalent) in urban, regional or environmental planning, economics, natural resource management, ecology, geography, earth or natural science, engineering, architecture, law, or a related field.    Or II

Registration as a graduate student in a college or university of recognized standing in urban, regional or environmental planning, economics, natural resource management, ecology, geography, earth or natural science, engineering, architecture, law, or a related field.    Or III

Possession of a Master's or two years of graduate work toward a Doctorate Degree in Urban, Regional or Environmental Planning, Economics, Natural Resource Management, Ecology, Geography, Earth or Natural Science, Engineering, Architecture, Law, or a related field or possession of another advanced degree with significant graduate course work in these fields.     Or IV

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college with any major and six months of intern experience as a college student or graduate undergoing supervised practical training comparable to Student Assistant, Graduate Student Assistant or Environmental Services Intern in a work assignment of a professional nature related to the environmental sciences or to planning, managing or regulating uses of land or water.
