Job Description and Duties

Under close supervision of the Supervising Mineral Resources Engineer, in a temporary capacity, the incumbent will receive training and gain practical experience in performing comprehensive review of the State's geothermal, hard minerals and leases with renewable energy potential, assisting in the economic analysis and preparation of promotional material for available resources.

Assist with the review of economic potential of CA State Lands Commission lands with renewable resources potential (including geothermal, solar, wind, and wave), leveraging the use of Geographic Information System (GIS).  Assist engineers in compiling available Arc GIS datasets that can be used to assess school lands with alternative energy potential such as solar and wind.  Focus on using GIS to overlay these resource potentials on State Lands Commission landholdings. Assist engineers on determining the economic and financial evaluation of renewable energy facility and investigating the value of renewable resources using detailed analyses of regulatory frameworks, electrical infrastructure, and economic considerations and impacts. Prepare promotional material for each school land parcel indicting the parcel's potential for solar, wind, geothermal, or biomass renewable energy development.

Compile available on line data related to renewable energy leasing from all available resources, including but not limited to Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Bureau of Land Management as well as other States and international data. Gather information related to competitive bidding criteria, range of bids, sizes of parcels and potentials offered for bidding, bidding process, documents required, etc. Develop a list of all required permits for various types of renewable energy leases on State Land Commission school lands and their corresponding agency. Assist with the development of a marketing/bidding strategy to publicize high potential school lands for leasing.

Various file maintenance activities, information upkeep (both electronic and hard copy), creating new files, facilitating file archiving and retrieval, ensuring paperwork flow and forms are maintained and on track. Document procedures performed during the resource evaluation process to assist engineers with the drafting of reports.

Attend meetings with various technical staff evaluating renewable energy resources in matters regarding economic evaluation of State resources.

Working Conditions

Employment in this class is restricted to students who are admitted for enrollment in a curriculum the subject matter of which will prepare the student to assist in attaining the objectives of the departmental organization where he/she will be employed. Employment in the class is based on continued enrollment at an accredited college or university.

Student Assistants are not allowed to work more than 1500 hours in a calendar year. The hours worked per month will be determined when the employee is selected. If selected, the employee will receive hourly compensation based on the time worked.
