Job Description and Duties


The Park Aide reporting location is at 200 Palm Canyon Drive, Borrego Springs, CA 92004, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center.

This position will work under the supervision of the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger).  The Park Aide is responsible for visitor services such as fee collection, information desk coverage, and interpretation.  Assist with operations at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Visitor Center, including aiding park volunteers and visitors, answering questions and phone calls, fee collection, and assisting with interpretive sales items.  Provide interpretive talks and information at the Palm Canyon Trail, and other locations as well, with an emphasis on protecting the endangered bighorn sheep and identifying blooming wildflowers and other plants.  Assist in providing crowd management at the trail and keeping park visitors separated from bighorn sheep – especially ewes with lambs.

Hours may be limited to occasional weekends during the winter, increasing to 30-40 hours per week during the spring, with the potential for occasional weekends during the summer.  A Park Aide is often the first staff member the public encounters when entering a State Park.  You must be prepared to represent State Parks in a positive way.  Applicants must be willing to purchase and wear a uniform and conform to minimum grooming standards.  Work on weekends and holidays will be required. Enthusiasm for the mission of State Parks and an appreciation of our natural and cultural heritage are a definite plus.  This is a great position for anyone interested in beginning a career in Parks.

Applicants must possess the ability to read, write and speak English at a level required for successful job performance; learn work procedures and park rules and regulations; interact successfully with the public; handle money and make change accurately; and work cooperatively and effectively with other park staff and volunteers.  Applicants must possess a valid driver license.  Job requires extensive standing, walking, stooping.

Priority consideration will be given to any person receiving State public assistance under the CalWORKS program.  Applicants who receive State public assistance need to identify their status as a CalWORKS recipient in the comments area on the application.  Applicants must submit a verification of their CalWORKS eligibility status, which may include the most recent Notice of Action showing TANF eligibility or a copy of your last aid check stub.  If verification is not submitted with the application, the application will not be processed.
