Job Description and Duties

Per CCR 249.3, this job control may be used to fill subsequent vacancies.

Under the close supervision of the CEO and the Deputy Manager I, the incumbent plans, organizes, and implements all aspects of the competitive exhibits program at the Nevada County Fair, the Draft Horse Classic, and the Country Christmas Faire.

Job Duties include:

  • Planning and overseeing the horse, livestock and still exhibits program for the annual Nevada County Fair.
  • Planning and overseeing the Harvest Fair exhibits program, and providing substantial entries and awards assistance for the horse show, at the annual Draft Horse Classic.
  • Planning and overseeing the commercial and competitive exhibits program at the annual Country Christmas Faire.
  • Coordinating the implementation of an equipment inventory program for the Fairgrounds.
  • Coordinating and overseeing a year-round volunteer program for the Fairgrounds.
  • Providing phone answering support and front counter customer service duties, as needed.

Working Conditions

The Nevada County Fairgrounds comprise more than 80 acres of treed grounds and multiple exhibit buildings and livestock barns. The Exhibit Representative will be located in the main administrative office, which is open to the public year-round. The office building is shared with permanent and temporary staff. Standard office equipment used includes a computer, printer, calculator, copy machine, phone system, time clock, and fax machine. The Exhibit Representative will also use equipment such as hand tools, power tools, ladders, measuring tapes, paint brushes, and a measuring wheel in the construction and installation of exhibits displays. The duties of the job are performed both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather.

Department Information

The Nevada County Fairgrounds, formally known as the 17th District Agricultural Association was established in 1884. In addition to the annual Nevada County Fair, it is home to the Draft Horse Classic, Harvest Fair, and Country Christmas Faire. The Fairgrounds feature and host an RV Park, Lions Lake, rental facilities, weekly events, and some of Nevada County’s largest outdoor events. The Nevada County Fairgrounds is an economic, social, and cultural treasure for Nevada County with a mission to assure long-term viability; to produce an annual Fair that is safe and fun; and to provide a gathering place for the community that showcases its interests, talents, heritage, and agriculture.

Special Requirements

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is REQUIRED and MUST be submitted with your application. The SOQ is a narrative discussion of how the candidate’s education, training, experience, and skills meet the desirable qualifications and demonstrate the candidate’s ability to perform the job duties listed in this bulletin. The SOQ serves as a documentation of each candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing and should be no longer than two (2) pages in length, single-spaced, 12 point Arial font.

1. Please describe your specific experience with planning, developing and executing successful horse/livestock shows and competitive still exhibits programs, with specific detail about your area(s) of responsibility.

2. Please describe your specific experience creating educational, attractive, and informative displays in a Fair and/or commercial setting.

3. Please describe any specific experience with recruiting and/or coordinating volunteers in order to successfully produce events.

When completing your SOQ, do not provide a single, narrative response. Each question above must be addressed one at a time (e.g., first provide a complete and independent response to Question #1, then a complete and independent response to Question #2, etc.) for consideration. Additionally, each response must be numbered and include the full text of the question being answered prior to each individual response to clearly indicate to which question you are responding. Please contact the hiring manager if you have any questions or would like further clarification on these requirements.

Write your responses carefully. Initial evaluation of each applicant will be based on the content of the answers and written communication skills demonstrated on their submitted SOQ.

Applicants who fail to follow these requirements or who do not provide responses to the specific questions in the order listed will be disqualified from the selection process.
